My Little Village

This is the translation of an iconic Odia poem titled ‘Chhota Mora Gan Ti‘ (ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି) by eminent poet Late Sachidananda Routray, who is recognised as the pioneer of modern Odia poetry. The translation into English is done by Ajay Mohalla, a leading Odia author. We have also reproduced the Original poem in Odia.

No name in any book
She stands in an obscure nook
May not be she in  anyone’s knowledge
My little village

A heaven for me on the earth
Where I took my birth
And here shall end my life’s short voyage
My little village

Water of this blissful giver
Flows in veins as a river
With her wind I set sail for life’s voyage
My little village

Her green ivies and marigolds
Taught me new words
Her spring dawns lent my eyes always a new image
My little village

Sweet flute of the cowherd boy
Reaper girls sing there in joy
Her creepers, her dense woods knit a deep bondage
My little village

How magical is her light’s glitter
Her darkness is even better
Her every dawn brings in me new vision  and  courage
My little village

Comes to me as a film strip
All this in my far-off trip
I wish I run to her to pay a small homage

ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି

ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି,
ଭୂଗୋଳ ପୋଥି ପତରେ ପଛେ
ନ ଥାଉ ତାର ନାଆଁଟି, 
ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି ।

ମାଟିର ସେଇ ସରଗ ମୋର, 
ସେଇଠି ଅଛି ମୋ ଷଠିଘର ।
ଜଳିବ ପୁଣି ସେଇଠି ଶେଷେ
ମୋହର ଚିତା ନିଆଁଟି ।
ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି

ଜନମି ତାର ଏନ୍ତୁଡ଼ି ଶାଳେ,
ବୁଲିଛି କେତେ ତା ତୋଟାମାଳେ ।
ପାଞ୍ଚଟି ମୋର ପଞ୍ଜରା କାଠି,
(ଶେଷେ) ସେଇଟି ହେବ ଡାହାଟି ।
ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି

ତାହାରି ଜଳ ରକତ ହୋଇ,
ଶିରାରେ ବହେ ଯେସନ ନଈ ।
ନିଶ୍ୱାସେ ମୋର ତାହାରି ବାୟୁ, 
ଚଳାଏ ପ୍ରାଣ ନାହାଟି
ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି।

ତାହାରି ଫୁଲ ଶାଗୁଆ ଲତା,
କଣ୍ଠେ ମୋର ଦେଲା ଯେ କଥା ।
ଆଖିରେ ଦେଲା ଚାହାଣି ନୂଆ, 
(ତାର) ଫଗୁଣ ଉଷା ପାହାନ୍ତି
ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି।

ତାହାରି ଲତା ତାହାରି ବନ, 
ତା ଗାଈଗୋଠ ମୁରଲୀ ଶ୍ଵନ ।
ଫସଲକଟା ମଧୁର ଗାନ,
ସକଳ ମୋର ସାହାଟି
ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି।

ଆଲୁଅ ତାର କି ମନୋହର, 
ଅନ୍ଧକାର ତା ଠାରୁ ଭଲ ।
ଜୀବନପଥେ ସକଳ ତାର, 
ଫିଟାଏ ନୂଆ ରାହାଟି
ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି।

ଏସବୁ କଥା ଛବିଟି ପରି
ପ୍ରବାସେ ମନ ଉଠଇ ଜଳି।
ଇଚ୍ଛା ହୁଏ ମାଟିରେ ତାର
ଶିରଟି ଥରେ ନୁଆନ୍ତି
ଛୋଟ ମୋର ଗାଆଁଟି।
